In terms of financial support, the FIFA Women’s World Cup will only receive $15 million in federal funding from Ottawa as existing facilities and stadiums, without any need for renovations, will be used. In comparison, the FIFA men’s tournaments cost billions of dollars to fund, largely because new stadiums and improved transportation infrastructure are required to host the month-long event. The 2014 Men’s World Cup in Brazil racked up a bill of $15 billion USD. Nevertheless, laying down grass in all six stadiums for the Women’s World Cup in Canada is estimated to only cost approximately $1.5 million.
Evidently, the men’s World Cup tournament is of a larger scale because it garners a broader international following. But why shouldn’t the women’s World Cup gain the same level of support and attention?
The Canadian women’s team is currently ranked ninth in the world. They have qualified for every World Cup since 1995 and did our nation proud by bringing home the Olympic bronze medal in 2012. The men’s team has not been to the World Cup since 1986.
Hawkeye vs. Deadpool #0
I really appreciated all the little nods to Clint’s deafness in this issue. I’m glad other writers are acknowledging it and it’s not just a temporary thing in Fraction’s run. I also enjoy the fact that Wade apparently knows sign language.
Also deadpool has his mask up to expose his lips so Hawkeye can read his lips so he doesn’t have to sign everything
I love Deadpool so much, you guys. Love love him. Every time I find out something new about Deadpool, I love him more, because it’s always shit like this.
Deadpool is lovely.
I am in love with everything about this crossover so far
Uh pretty sure he pulls his mask up for facial expressions not lip reading. Deaf people have a hard fucking time lip reading some people cause that shit ain’t easy and people don’t always freaking enunciate. In ASL you not only sign with your hands your facial expressions are key.
Check out this handy freaking video kids.
@mitaukano, while you’re right that lipreading isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do, it could easily be why Deadpool lifted his mask. Some d/Deaf people do find it helpful to look at a person’s mouth while also having signed conversations, especially if the person signing is a novice.
Furthermore, lipreading isn’t the only reason to have the mouth visible during a conversation with a deaf/HOH person. The mouth is also vastly important in using Cued Speech, wherein indicative hand signals are positioned near the mouth, and in ASL for conveying mouth morphemes.
And one more little piece of advice coming from someone who’s actually deaf: don’t dish out lectures on a topic with which you are only marginally familiar. Facial expressions are important to a good many signs, sure, but calling them “key” isn’t accurate at all.
#safetytipsforladies: A hashtag about how tired women are of being told to do stupid, ineffective, unrealistic things to avoid being raped.
best one by far
This is legit.
More PSAs need to stop worrying about offending people and get down to the nitty gritty like this. It’s the only way to open so many eyes.
If people are offended, they are probably guilty.
Disney vs. 7 early fairytales
The 1812 version of Snow White is even worse when you consider that the girl was only seven years old in the tale (plus her unconscious body ended up being carted around by the prince until one of his servants accidentally woke her up). Also, in The Little Mermaid, the mermaid’s unable to speak because she had her tongue cut out >__<
But I’d love to see faithful adaptations of the original tales. Especially Bluebeard. We need a Bluebeard adaptation.
Actually, the original-original pre-Grimm Brothers’ stories that were passed around Europe via oral tradition are nowhere near as violent as the Grimm’s made them. Cinderella’s stepsisters were never ugly and kept their eyes, Snow White’s mother was not even a villain (instead a group of bandits were), and instead of spending the whole story napping Sleeping Beauty outwitted a dangerous bandit leader, wouldn’t let him sleep with her, and saved herself.
The original oral stories were radically changed by the Brothers Grimm to fit their personal and political beliefs. Most notably, they often added in female characters solely for the purpose of making them evil villains and took away most of the heroines’ agency and intelligence. Both brothers belonged to a small fanatical sect of Catholicism that vilified women because of the idea of Original Sin and Wilhelm in particular had a particularly deep hatred of women. The Grimms were actually pretty horrible people. Those cannibalistic queens and ugly stepsisters and the mass amount of violence against women didn’t exist until the Grimms wanted them to. Their ideas stuck so soundly though that we now assume they were in the original tales and that these terrible characters and ideas come out of some perceived barbaric Old World culture. But in truth they’re really the Grimms’ weird obsession with hating women showing through. The original oral folklore focused on the heroes’ and heroines’ good deeds and used them as ways to teach cultural norms and a society’s rules and encouraged girls to be quick-witted and street-savvy instead of passive princesses, and the Grimms promptly stripped that all away.
"Grimms Bad Girls and Bold Boys" by Ruth Bottingheimer is an excellent book on this
We had to read The Book of Lost Things for school and it’s Grimm level crazy
Not only that, you’re skipping out a really important thing: the brother’s grimm got those tales from WOMEN, women were the ones who would tell these tales orally and the brother’s grimm took them, altered them to be sexist and never gave the women credit.
